It's the most concrete question you can ask before selling jewellery: how much is a gram of 10K gold worth today in Canada? 10K is the most common alloy in North America — most chains, rings and bracelets sold here are made of it. Here is how its price per gram is calculated, and how to avoid unpleasant surprises.
A 10K piece is an alloy containing about 41.7% fine gold, the rest being other metals that give it hardness. It is the legal minimum for an item to be sold as "gold" in Canada — and that is exactly why it is everywhere: it stands up well to daily wear and costs less to buy than 14K or 18K.
The direct consequence: at equal weight, a 10K piece contains less fine gold than 14K or 18K, and is therefore worth less per gram. Our article 10K, 14K or 18K gold: what's the difference in value? covers that comparison in detail.
The formula is simple: pure gold price per gram × 0.417. If pure gold trades at, say, $180 CAD per gram, the metal value of one gram of 10K sits around $75. Since the market rate changes daily, that number moves with it — check the live rate on our homepage and run the math with your exact weight in our calculator.
The calculation above gives the metal value at market rate — a reference, not an offer. The buyback price a buyer proposes is always lower, because it covers verification, refining and operations. The gap varies greatly between buyers: that is exactly what deserves comparison, as our guide Where to sell gold in Montreal explains.
Three checks before comparing offers: the unit (some quote per ounce — about 31.1 grams — which inflates the number), the purity reference (a "gold price per gram" without precision usually means pure gold, not 10K), and the currency (USD and CAD differ significantly). A 10K price compared against a pure-gold price is meaningless.
Look for the "10K" or "417" hallmark on your items, weigh them roughly, and run the online estimate.
